‘Future Proofing our Public Services’

Déjà vu…pretty much 1 year on and back at Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd in the SBARC|SPARK building.

…Back in the same room, discussing the implementation of sustainability.

This time the particular focus is ‘Future Proofing our Public Services’, a joint event hosted by Centre for Digital Public Services / Canolfan Gwasanaethau Cyhoeddus Digidol and The Office of the Future Generations Commissioner for Wales.

The Panelists and audience put forward thought-provoking viewpoints.

Key takeaways from the event…

*The Legislation: The Well-Being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015*

An aspirational and important legislation, which sets Wales apart from other places.

🗓 This is a period of closing the implementation gap regarding Well-being and Sustainability, noted by Derek Walker.

Implementation ideally is about ‘carrots and not sticks’.

Collaboration is key and one of the 5 Ways of Working set out in the legislation to deliver the Wales We Want.

*The Reality*

There is frustration and acknowledgement of having to implement change with the backdrop of budget cuts and changes in the public sector.

Reality is, can we afford to not do it? Longer we leave tackling carbon emissions, the harder it will get.

*Digital Sustainability*

This is a period of transformation. Transformation isn’t easy.

Digital is a key lever to a sustainable future but needs to be implemented effectively.

We run the risk and leave groups such as the ‘older’ people, if incluvisity is not designed as part of the process.

User Centred Design is fundamental, not JUST what the service provider wants but important to consider user experience and lifestyle.

*Public Sector*

The implementation of the Act is not about doing for future generations at the expense of current, but frustration shared.

The public sector is operating against short term constraints for long-term goals, conflict exists.

Public sector organisations are complex networks and at times change can be hard to implement.

Established organisations already have existing culture and implementation required working within and embedding a culture for sustainability.

Cultural change is fundamental.

This sustainability journey is about adaptation and adoption.

*Hearts and Minds*

The Act should be viewed as our Northern Star. This is a journey we have never been on and should not give up on – Myra Hunt.

This journey is about winning hearts and minds.

A journey about reconnecting with what we truly want.

Let’s be Good Ancestors….our generation’s legacy is at stake here!
