With the closure of Wales Tech Week I thought it would be useful to give a round-up of my thoughts.
I attended Wales Tech Week knowing full well tech, systems, digital and data will be an important as part of our ‘Net Zero’ journey.
I networked over the days and contributed as a panellist the discussion on “Navigating the Net Zero Frontier: A Holistic Journey Towards Sustainable Tomorrow”. Sarah Dickins chaired the panel discussion, to which Russ Hall, Jonathan Oates, Raj Kandasamy BSc, BEng(Hons) and I contributed, offering very different views and insights.
Key takeaways from the week…
We are throwing around the term ‘Net Zero’ hoping/expecting people to understand it. Unfortunately many people don’t!
Training and sharing of knowledge is needed to bring about common understanding.
More I think about it and the more I say it out aloud…we won’t be able to reach Net Zero without Tech.
Tech will allow us/organisations to measure and manage with metrics. You can’t manage, what you can’t measure…as they say!
Tech is useful to carry climate data but not the answer to all our problems.
Tech may also present its own problems.
The longer we leave really tackling Net Zero, the harder it will get!
Net Zero will require alot of work, it won’t be a case of ‘Business as Usual’…simple!
Government are very intune, expect alot of change and policy to come through.
For real change to happen public bodies have to do their bit and the generally public have to also be on board.
Supply chains need to be considered closely to reduce carbon emissions. Let’s remember supply chains cross countries, continents, languages and cultures, making them complex.
It is therefore complex to implement change within supply chains.
Not all individuals/organisations/countries are at the same stage of the journey and this needs to be considered when implementing your organisation’s Zero strategy across borders and boundaries.
Large organisations need to consider how they partner/work with smaller organisations.
Startups and SMEs may be able to present innovative ideas, solutions and move quickly to help implement changes needed.
There will be new jobs but also a skills gap, which needs to be tackled.
