A bold move has been made by the Biden Administration. CDP disclosures have been made law for major federal (government) suppliers.
Why is this step important in combating climate change?
– The United States (US) is largest carbon emitter in the world
– The US government is also the largest purchaser in the world
One could argue such a move is a great sign of leadership, ‘leading by example’. Given the rocky road to the Paris Agreement for the US, I would say the real proof is in the pudding! It will be interesting to see how this plays out. It is always just that bit easier to make bold statements publicly during COP on climate change but implementing it domestically can be another game altogether.
As someone that specialises in Low Carbon Public Procurement (in essence this is what we are talking about) I can say countries and regions (across Europe), far move advanced in the carbon debate have struggled during the implementation of low carbon into public procurement. Implementation is not easy. The US also needs to factor in is the complex ‘State’ governance structure, power dynamic through supply chains and the reality of barriers during implementation.
