Climate Change is clouded with jargon, terms and acronyms!
To help you get your head around some, here’s the United Nations’ Climate [Change] Dictionary for you.
Don’t get me wrong, at times it can be very useful to get down to technical definitions (…especially when it’s geeky research, PhDs and technical implementation stuff). Let’s face it, accuracy and precision is key here.
However, for many of you out there such definitions by the sheer number and jargon can be paralysing.
This alone can hamper progress you are trying to make.
Let’s take terms we often use such as ‘adaptation’ and ‘mitigation’, which are general words in the English language.
The terms, the concept, within the climate change space are very loaded, technical in nature. They have their own active operating definitions in terms of CO2 removal, system disruption, remodelling, interaction within operating ecosystems and policy areas…that sounds like alot of jargon in itself!!
…you see where I’m going with this now.
By no means do I think you or I will/need to conquer all definitions in such an emerging area.
However, I do feel it would be handy for you to get to grips with some of these terms.
You will begin to comes across some terms more in your working lives as we gear up action to combat climate change.
