Barriers to progressing on Net Zero are varied…
– High cost was the most common barrier cited by respondents, with 59% saying it was a moderate or significant barrier.
– Both SMEs and larger enterprises cite financial constraints as a significant barrier.
– Other key barriers include regulatory uncertainty (50%) and lack of trusted information sources (46%).
2. Benefits
Benefits (actual and perceived) by an organisations undertaking Net Zero action varies from….
– Organisational reputation/public opinion (90%).
– Contributing to tackling climate change (88%).
– Regulatory and compliance (85%).
– Staff recruitment and retentions (80%).
3. Best practices for organisations and industry bodies include…
– Accelerate carbon footprint measurement.
– Use trusted information sources.
– Invest in renewable energy and efficiency measures.
– Develop comprehensive carbon reduction plans.
– Invest in education and training.
– Collaboration and hands on support is vital to achieve Net Zero.
4. Recommendations for policy makers.
– Address high costs through targeted financial incentives and schemes.
– Facilitate training and capacity building.
– Enhance access to wider financing.
– Improve regulatory certainty.
– Enhance access to trusted information sources.
– Recognise SMEs are indirectly in-scope for carbon emissions disclosure policy.
