A carbon offset is a way to ‘compensate’ for your carbon emissions by funding an equivalent carbon dioxide saving elsewhere.
Today, after two meetings where carbon offsetting was mentioned I was left wondering what your view is on this.
Some examples of carbon offsetting projects include:
– Planting trees and creating woodlands
– Installing renewable energy solutions
– Investing in biodiversity and conservation
In the past I’ve heard statements such as….
“It’s greenwashing”
“It is like putting a plaster on the problem instead of fixing it”
“View depend on how, where and why you offset”
“It’s part of the journey to Net Zero”
“Offsetting should be used as a last resort”
“Offsetting is less of the evil…but not doing anything is worse”
“Offsetting as part of a long-term strategy allows you to take responsibility until benefits of internal decarbonisation action can filters through into an organisation”
